What Can Trigger Erythromelalgia?

A rare condition that is known as erythromelalgia can cause a consistent, intense burning sensation in the feet. It can alter the quality of life, despite the fact it is not a fatal condition. Additional symptoms that are associated with this condition can include swelling, tenderness, and a burning feeling that can radiate to the entire foot. The symptoms often affect both feet and can be severe. This condition may develop from genetic reasons, and can happen as attacks. They can begin with itching, and may progress to severe pain. These attacks can be triggered by warm weather, sweating, exercise, or being immobile for long periods of time. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who  can properly diagnose and prescribe medication that may help the symptoms of erythromelalgia.

Some foot conditions may require additional professional care. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Bergen Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Rare Foot Conditions

The majority of foot conditions are common and can be treated by a podiatrist.  Standard diagnostic procedures are generally used to identify specific conditions and treatment can be rendered. A podiatrist also treats rare foot conditions which can be difficult to diagnose and may need extra attention and care.

There are many rare foot conditions that can affect children. Some of these can include:

  • Freiberg’s disease
  • Kohler’s disease
  • Maffucci syndrome

Freiberg’s disease - This can be seen as a deterioration and flattening of a metatarsal bone that exists in the ball of the foot. It typically affects pre-teen and teenage girls, but can affect anyone at any age. Symptoms that can accompany this can be swelling, stiffness, and the patient may limp.

Kohler’s disease - This often targets the bone in the arch of the foot and affects younger boys. It can lead to an interruption of the blood supply which ultimately can lead to bone deterioration. The patient may limp or experience tenderness, swelling, and redness.

Maffucci syndrome - This affects the long bones in a child’s foot leading to the development of abnormal bone lesions. They are benign growths and typically develop in early childhood and the bones may be susceptible to breaking.

A podiatrist can properly diagnose and treat all types of rare foot conditions. If your child is affected by any of these symptoms or conditions, please don’t hesitate to call our office so the correct treatment method can begin.

Shopping for Shoes

When you are ready to buy new shoes, it is important to keep function and comfort in mind. Fashion should be secondary. Tips for helping to pick out the right shoes for you include shopping for shoes later in the day as the feet expand as the day wears on, measuring your feet, and trusting your comfort level at the time of trying on the shoes. Well-fitting shoes will not need a break-in period to feel comfortable. Furthermore, bring the foot coverings you plan to wear with the new shoes to the store, make sure there is at least a half-inch between the longest toe and the end of the shoe, and pay attention to the width as well as the length of the shoes. If you have additional questions about purchasing the right shoes for your feet, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can best direct you.

Getting the right shoe size is an important part of proper foot health. Seek the assistance of one of our podiatrists from Bergen Foot & Ankle. Our doctors will provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Getting the Right Shoe Size

There are many people who wear shoes that are the incorrect size, negatively affecting their feet and posture. Selecting the right shoes is not a difficult process, so long as you keep several things in mind when it comes to choosing the right pair.

  • When visiting the shoe store, use the tools available to measure your foot.
  • Be sure there is ‘wiggle room’. There should be about an inch between your toes and the tip of your shoes.
  • Do not always assume you are the same size, as manufacturers run differently.
  • Purchase shoes later in the day, as your feet swell as the day progresses.
  • If a shoe is not comfortable, it is not suitable. Most shoes can’t be ‘broken in’, and comfort should be the ultimate goal when it comes to choosing the right pair of shoes

As our feet hold our body weight and keep us moving, it is important to treat them right. Picking the right pair of shoes can provide your feet comfort and mobility without pain.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our offices located in Fort Lee, NJ and Flushing, NY . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Stress Fracture Risk Factors

A stress fracture in the foot essentially occurs when microdamage accumulates and the bones develop small breaks. If you are an athlete or a runner, then you might be particularly interested in preventing the onset of a stress fracture in the foot. There are certain factors that might put athletes at an increased risk of developing stress fractures of some kind. For example, if an athlete has a particularly high running mileage or especially if they are wearing inappropriate footwear, then a stress fracture might be more likely.  Also, other risk factors for runners and athletes include training errors and leg length discrepancies. If you are someone that runs frequently and are concerned about developing a stress fracture, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist.

Activities where too much pressure is put on the feet can cause stress fractures. To learn more, contact one of our podiatrists from Bergen Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep your pain free and on your feet.

Dealing with Stress Fractures of the Foot and Ankle

Stress fractures occur in the foot and ankle when muscles in these areas weaken from too much or too little use.  The feet and ankles then lose support when walking or running from the impact of the ground. Since there is no protection, the bones receive the full impact of each step. Stress on the feet can cause cracks to form in the bones, thus creating stress fractures.

What Are Stress Fractures?

Stress fractures occur frequently in individuals whose daily activities cause great impact on the feet and ankles. Stress factors are most common among:

  • Runners
  • People affected with Osteoporosis
  • Tennis or basketball players
  • Gymnasts
  • High impact workouts

Symptoms

Pain from the fractures occur in the area of the fractures and can be constant or intermittent. It will often cause sharp or dull pain with swelling and tenderness. Engaging in any kind of activity which involves high impact will aggravate pain.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in Fort Lee, NJ and Flushing, NY . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Various Causes of Foot Pain

Many foot problems can be easily prevented. Wearing shoes that fit correctly can be one of the first things to do, in addition to performing routine foot stretches that can keep the feet strong. There are various areas of the foot that can be painful. Foot pain in the morning may be indicative of plantar fasciitis, and many runners suffer from this condition. Pain in the toe and surrounding area may be sesamoiditis, which affects the two small bones that are found under the joint of the big toe. If the skin on the feet becomes infected, it may be athlete’s foot. This contagious condition is caused by a fungus, and enters the body through small cracks in the skin on the feet. Effective prevention methods consist of refraining from sharing socks, shoes, and towels. When shoes are worn that do not have adequate room for the toes to move freely in, hammertoe or a bunion may develop, and there are various treatment techniques for these. If you have foot pain for any reason, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist as quickly as possible who can help you with a diagnosis and treatment options.
